  • Essay / Hwang's Ethics - 1038

Ethics can be defined as the study and philosophy of human conduct, with emphasis on the determination of right and wrong (Ferrell & Fraedrich 2010). Ethics is an individual belief system of knowing what is right and acceptable and what is wrong. While it is true that ethics is closely linked to law, regulations and rules, it does not go against research or hinder scientific progress. Woo-Suk Hwang and his team paint a picture of the widespread fraud and ethical violations occurring in biological research and testing. The implications of scientific fraud and embezzlement extend beyond the realm of pure research to the realm of public policy. In this case, fraud may become a matter of immediate practical importance (Erwin, Gendin & Kleiman 1994). Woo-Suk Hwang's violation of the bioethics law, fraud and embezzlement are a good example. The ethical transgressions committed by Hwang and his team go far beyond the misuse of research funds. There is serious misconduct and poor research behavior on the part of his team. The research carried out by Woo-Suk Hwang and his team involved conducting research and experiments in the field of cloning. A number of ethical violations arise from the way Hwang and his team conduct their research. Other ethical violations by Hwang include misappropriating US$3 million and using those funds to buy himself a car and gifts for politicians, intentionally fabricating data to apply for research funds and violation of the bioethics law which prohibits the purchase of eggs for research. Hwang broke the law given the means by which he obtained the eggs used in research; he seemed to have coerced his young researchers into donating...... middle of paper ......ity Press, Oxford.Driver, J 2006, Ethics: The fundamentals.
