Essay / Is nuclear power the way forward? - 1462
Is nuclear power the way forward?Nuclear power? What is nuclear energy and why are countries pursuing it or calling for it to be banned? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, nuclear energy is created by a process called fission in which uranium atoms are separated, leading to the release of energy (paragraph one, epa.gov, 22 /04/2011). The first major investment in nuclear energy was made through the Manhanttan project. The results of Project Manhanttan were seen on the island of Japan during World War II, where two nuclear bombs were used to end the war in the Pacific. Since this event, countries have hired their best scientists to create nuclear power, with some investing in nuclear research for alternative methods of energy or security. For example, in 1974, India successfully created a nuclear weapon, which caused its mortal enemy Pakistan to create a nuclear weapon because it feared that India would use it on its country. As nuclear energy was developed for peaceful purposes as well as security purposes, it has caused damage to the environment, proven to be disastrous and poses a threat to global security. Environment The use of nuclear energy can be harmful to the environment. Nuclear installations generate a large amount of waste which is then reused in a reprocessing process. According to the article, Nuclear Reprocessing: Dangerous, Dirty, and Expensive, published by the Union of Concerned Scientist, they mention that the reprocessing process occurs when plutonium and uranium are separated from nuclear waste using a huge amount of chemicals (paragraph one, ucsusa .org, 04/05/2011), which shows that more nuclear waste is being created from already nuclear waste. Additionally, reprocessing has been seen as a method to eliminate...... middle of paper ..., although it is losing ground in some areas of the country (paragraph one, Riedel, 10/12/2009 ), thus clearly showing that Pakistan's nuclear projects pose a threat to national security. Therefore, if Pakistan poses a threat to national security, then all nuclear power plants pose a threat. Finally, in Ashton and Kayyen's article, they mention that Osama bin Laden consulted a Pakistani scientist and talked about nuclear weapons (paragraph five, Ashton, Carter et al., 06/27/2005), which shows that this same scientist creates nuclear weapons. because the government sells information to terrorists. The unstable government of Pakistan creates a great threat. Conclusion Overall, nuclear power is not an answer to clean energy alternatives because it harms the environment, it can be devastated, and it is a target for terrorists. The world would be better without nuclear energy.
