Essay / The need to be familiar with the things of the country and the ancient...
Over time, the relationship between man and nature evolves as men begin to realize that nature is a merciless force. Man versus nature is a conflict between a person and a natural force and is used as a plot device in works of fiction. The most commonly used forces of nature include winter's help and conflict with wild animals. 19th century authors were naturalists. Naturalism means that human behavior is determined by the environment. These authors objectively evaluate human actions. They describe life as a battle that will be lost no matter what, which concludes that humans are incapable of controlling their future. This literary movement helps to justify their representation of the conflict. The struggle of man against nature has been used to develop a literary plot which also serves to expose the heroic or guilty side of the characters. Jack London uses nature as an obstacle to portray a stupid human. Nature can be very restrictive and limits expose an individual's character as they react to go beyond the limit. This is seen in “To Make a Fire”. A man was hiking a trail in the harsh environment of the Yukon to mine for gold. He decided to travel even though it was "75 degrees below zero" (483), showing that he is overconfident in his survival skills. His actions lead to serious consequences. This man considers this trip easy and makes fun of the guys who advise him not to go. "This did not lead him to meditate on his fragility as a creature of temperature, nor on the fragility of man in general, capable only of living within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there , it did not lead him to the conjectural realm of immortality and man's place in the universe” (482). ...s seen in the poem "The need to be versed in the things of the country" and the novel The old man and the sea. But a question which remains very important is whether nature and man will be able to day coexist in a compatible relationship? .Print.London, Jack. “To make a fire Holt Elements of Literature. Ed.
