Essay / Juan Williams: Fired for Telling the Truth - 721
Former NPR personality Juan Williams was fired in October 2010 for a politically incorrect statement he made on Fox's The O'Reilly Factor News. Williams was chatting with host Bill O'Reilly about his feelings about seeing Muslims on airplanes in their costumes. His remarks led to his firing at NPR and sparked a massive debate among some journalists and conservatives over whether or not Williams was going too far with his comment. Juan Williams was an NPR news analyst for the Talk of the Nation program, which he hosted for ten years. years. During his ten years at NPR, Williams was no stranger to controversial comments. However, these comments were never made on his NPR show, they were made on Fox News – a cable television news network – where Williams also serves as a news analyst. Several statements he made on the station, including the supposedly anti-Islamic comment, have NPR CEO Vivian Schiller on edge. “The rules prohibit NPR analysts from making speculative statements or expressing opinions on television that would be considered unacceptable if expressed on an NPR program. The policy has some gray areas, they acknowledged, but it generally prohibits personal attacks or statements that negatively characterize large groups of people, such as Muslims (Paul Farhi par. 7). Schiller believed Williams continually represented NPR in a negative light with his insensitive views broadcast on Fox News. Some journalists agree with Schiller and oppose Williams' decision to reveal his "fears" on national television. Greg Sargent explains: “The fact is that the idea that you should be afraid of anyone who 'looks Muslim' is not a reality, it's nonsense. He wasn't telling a brave truth or making a personal confession... in the middle of an article... "Juan Williams fired: The pitfalls of the 'insta-opinions' era." The Christian Science Monitor.
