Policies and legislation have set the standard for an inclusive education system that values all students, regardless of their differences. As a pre-service teacher about to enter the teaching profession, it will be my responsibility to cultivate optimal teaching and learning experiences that will support the social, emotional, and academic development of all students. Although this task seems daunting and challenging, it is also exciting to be one of the many pioneers who will contribute to educational reform, resulting in the ideal of inclusive education. In my classroom there may be learners who are: visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically disabled, ADHD, ASD, bereaved, affected by trauma or gifted and talented, to name just a few considerations. How will I be able to provide access to learning that will enhance the social, emotional, and academic development of every student in my class? This article will discuss ways in which the teacher can set up the learning environment to maximize teaching and learning, highlighting some potential benefits and difficulties of implementing such practices as a new teacher. First, it is important that when planning I consider what all students are like. need to learn and the best teaching and learning strategies available to deliver that content. Van Kraayenoord & Elkins (2009) argue that teachers should initially design and plan inclusive curriculum, teaching, and assessment using the concept of universal design for learning (UDL). This concept recognizes that all students are unique and have varying strengths, weaknesses and interests. However, rather than the teacher tailoring the curriculum to the specific needs of the individual when planning the middle of the document......a successful inclusive classroom design. As a new teacher, setting up a learning environment using the strategies described will be difficult. However, in order to allay my fears, it is important that I familiarize myself with existing practices of successful differentiated instruction, engage in professional development and discussions, build relationships within the classroom and beyond school. In addition to this, one of the most important practices for me as a teacher is that of reflection. As a new teacher, I am sure I will make mistakes, but it is what I learn from those mistakes that will make all the difference to my teaching and to student learning.
