This discriminatory behavior makes children feel out of place; there to get away from their school and learn. It is up to us as teachers to continue our learning and educate ourselves about the diverse world in which we live and teach. A child's gender, culture, skin color, clothing and appearance do not change who they are inside or their ability to learn. Teachers should not have preconceived ideas about a child. When children have strong relationships between home and school, their learning and development are better supported (Hedges, Cullen, and Jorden 2011). When teachers interpret the curriculum, it is important that they include practices that connect home, family, and community experiences. With a positive and supportive school environment, children can learn to feel and show acceptance toward all people, regardless of age, gender, race, culture, and socioeconomic status. Children can learn to value and respect each other. Australia has a wide range of cultures and ethnicities in schools and the majority of schools use effective methods to accommodate and enrich a child's learning experience. Schools should support the continuing professional development of teachers so that they gain greater knowledge of different cultures and the links between educational outcomes.
