  • Essay / Secondary school should start later than primary school

Have you ever had a restless night's sleep? Feelings of aches and fatigue overwhelm you all day long. Now imagine that you sleep every night. Accomplishing simple tasks would be difficult if one lacks sleep. Realizing your potential would be almost impossible. In order to get rid of these unforgettable feelings, many people slept late and went to bed early. But with such early start times in high school, many students feel sleep deprived and fail to perform at their best. This would improve the health of students. Some people believe it would be better for parents and school districts to keep start times current. However, many people believe that delaying the start of the school year would have a positive impact on students, outweighing the disadvantages. I think delaying the school start time would be a wonderful idea for many schools. One of the reasons why high schools should start later than elementary schools is that with such early start times, average high school students do not get enough sleep and are considered sleep deprived. . Sleep depravation is very common among high school students. With disadvantaged sleep patterns, adolescents have reduced mental acuity and attention span during school hours. As a result, grades and test scores are below their potential. In fact, "a recent survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation showed that only 20% of adolescents report getting 9 hours of optimal sleep...... middle of paper ...this would be something that school districts should evaluate. However, others might feel that pushing back arrival times would interfere with parents' and administration's schedules. Obviously, the best view on this topic is to revise entry times into secondary schools so that students achieve a more desirable sleep cycle and better overall health.
