Essay / My favorite work of Edgar Allen Poe Mask of Red...
Edgar Allan Poe was famous for his poems, short stories, motifs, themes, etc. After reading three of his most famous works: “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven,” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” I found “The Masque of the Red Death” to be my favorite. In this story, Edgar Allan Poe captivated the reader with his entire concept, symbols, and the way he infused the story into an interesting and haunting story. I believe that Edgar Allan Poe did a wonderful job describing the effects of the horrible disease the Red Death. . Poe used a concept that everyone knows, a party, to show how devious and powerful death was. Prince Prospero was the protagonist of “The Masque of the Red Death” and, according to the text, “he was happy, fearless, and sagacious” (Poe 13). To escape the plague, Prince Prosper invited a thousand “healthy and light” friends and courtiers (Poe 13) to join him in his voluntary seclusion. They wanted to lock themselves inside the walls, to lock the Red Death outside. As the party and pestilence continued to reign over Prince Prospero and his friends, they all began to feel nervous and restless for some unknown reason. The tension caused by these feelings intensified when many members of the group became aware of a mysterious masked figure, who was sneakily and silently spreading his presence (disease) around the castle. The cloaked figure in the shadows was the Red Death himself. I loved this concept and plot because I believe it infused this death with a happy, joyful moment, which really showed the power and constant presence of the Red Death during his reign. through the many symbols used by Edgar Allan Poe. My...... middle of paper......people (even though the quote is presented in the present and in hindsight). The Red Death played a defining role in European history, and Poe did a wonderful and interesting job of laying out this story. What really attracted me to this story was that I knew a lot about the plague and was able to make many connections between the “Masque of the Red Death” and the story. This story shows how devious and powerful the plague was and filters the story very well into an elaborate story. "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe was my favorite of the three because it had an elaborate and captivating plot, wonderful symbols, and a very interesting story. All of the themes, motifs and other elements used in this story really tied it all together and created a very bold, fascinating and somewhat historical story that I really enjoyed reading..
