  • Essay / Green is the new black - 885

Green is the new blackWhat if you knew that you were destroying the earth every day, minute, hour, second of your life? People, humans, harm the earth. Without recycling everything we use, reducing pollution from cars and machines, or reducing our water consumption, we are harming our only home, the earth. Every second, an additional 1.5 hectares of rainforest is lost to land development and deforestation, leading to huge habitat losses. In 36 other US states, anticipating local and statewide water shortages, 64 million tons of materials will be landfilled. Ready to go green? We can recycle our waste, have clean and efficient machines and cars, or simply use less water. These everyday things can make a big difference in the way you live and in the planet. If we continue to fail to recycle, conserve energy, or clean the air, we will kill our home and eventually us humans. Throwing away recyclable items decreases the energy, water and natural resources that can be saved through recycling. Home batteries and electronic devices often contain hazardous chemicals that can, if sent to a local landfill, leak through the bottom barrier and pollute groundwater. This can contaminate everything from the soil our food grows in to the water that will eventually flow out of aquifers into our tap water. Many of these chemicals cannot be removed from the drinking water supply. Or crops harvested from contaminated fields. The risks to human health are monstrous. If you think that's bad news, here's more. Did you know that 137 is the number of species of plants, animals and insects that are disappearing every day due to rainforest deforestation? This equates to around 50,000 species per year. This can be very bad for the human race, losing so many species...... middle of paper......generations? By going green, it can save our home and help it shrink under our feet. By making better choices as individuals, we can save our homes and stay healthy. We can recycle simple products, turn down the thermostat and use less water. By doing these things, we can save our home, one green at a time. So keep going, help save our house, your house, go green. Works Cited “What’s the Problem” Go Green Initiative. 2007-2009. Internet.
