Essay / Advantages and disadvantages of road pricing - 910
Road pricing generates incomeWhen purchasing a new vehicle, you will have to face certain costs, you will have to register the vehicle in your name, obtain a certificate technical inspection and many other similar costs. This is a way to generate revenue that could be used to improve parts of the transportation system, such as building new roads or expanding existing roads. Fees charged for negligent driving behavior, such as not wearing a seat belt or talking on a cell phone, not only increase the revenue generated, but also demotivate drivers and prevent them from getting into situations that could lead to accidents . The revenue generated could also be used to provide much-needed road safety awareness and additional assistance in the form of employing more safety officers at roadblocks. Road pricing can solve traffic jams. Congestion pricing, or charging fees for using roads that may be very congested. is also a means of generating revenue and can be an effective measure to reduce congestion in areas prone to high levels of congestion (Maria Borjesson, Jonas Eliasson, Muriel Hugosson and Karin Brundel-Freij 2012). Congestion pricing may also attempt to make other transport options, such as public transport, more attractive to road users, as it would be more expensive to drive your own vehicle rather than using public transport . In doing so, air pollution could also decrease because there are fewer vehicles on the roads. Many users will be discouraged from using certain roads because they have to pay to use them and may find alternative routes or change the times they usually travel. This reduces traffic jams and the roads will be used for longer periods and will not be concentrated only at specific intervals, leading to high traffic jams...... middle of paper ...... passage for vehicles emergency because they cannot get through to reach the victims in time. This has a negative impact on the economy as it can lead to deaths, leading to a decrease in population size. There could be an increased risk of accidents/collisions which could have been avoided if traffic flow had been managed. This happens when drivers try to squeeze into tight spots in order to move around and not get stuck in traffic. However, there are not only downsides associated with traffic jams for the economy, below is a list of positives: When the roads are congested drivers are forced to drive slowly, which reduces the number of accidents likely to occur. Most users usually reschedule their trips to avoid rush hours when certain roads are congested. This is positive as the road is now used for an increasing number of hours per day.
