Essay / Homelessness: A National Epidemic - 1308
In our country today, we, citizens of the United States of America, face growing economic and social problems. Homelessness is one of the major problems that emerged centuries ago and is still relevant today. Being homeless simply means lacking a permanent, stable, and safe place to rest at night. The article “The Future of Homelessness” primarily discusses how homelessness has existed for many decades, and it appears it will continue to exist for many more. The author states that “homelessness is no longer considered an emergency” (29). This means that the “poor,” as society calls them, are not a major problem that requires the attention of government and other senior officials. The majority of homeless people live in abandoned houses, under bridges, on sidewalks and in parks. For the homeless, any place where they can lay their heads is “home.” The government and some indifferent citizens tend to look down on the homeless and dehumanize them as if they are not human beings. In many cases, when homeless people try to ask for help, they are often ignored or told no. civilians should show compassion and help them rather than looking down on them and treating them as if they were animals. People spent their money on unnecessary things such as expensive cars, clothes, and jewelry. Citizens should take the time to donate time and money to help the needy. The country is plagued by increasing job losses and rising gasoline prices are believed to be a major factor leading to unexpected poverty. These factors may be the reasons why the government and citizens choose not to help the homeless because they are struggling to support themselves,...... middle of paper ..... . ple, you can tell that they are linked by melancholy. I wish you could help them in any way you can, but the best thing any one person can do is offer some spare change. You can see the glorious look on their faces when they receive just a few pennies. Homeless people are more grateful and appreciate the little things while a non-homeless person has to do it all. While the homeless focus on their basic needs such as where they are going to sleep or how they are going to eat their next meal, we working class citizens focus on the amount of "stuff" we don't have. not. If more energy were devoted to solving our social, economic and environmental problems, the world would be becoming a strong and prosperous nation. Instead, people focus only on themselves and their needs. If we all came together as one, the world would be a much better place..
