CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The National Service Training Program in Malaysia began in 2004 after the Malaysian Parliament agreed to implement the program. The objectives of the program are to increase the spirit of patriotism among the younger generation, inculcate racial harmony and national integrity, move from positive character to moral value, develop volunteerism and create a young generation active physically, mentally and full of self-confidence. This research was undertaken to evaluate the program from the perspective of a national service trainee, before, during and after completing the entire programme. The research findings cannot be generalized due to the qualitative nature of the research, but provide a rich insight into society and all stakeholders involved in the program. PLKN also acts as a mechanism for training self-disciplined adolescents. Self-discipline is the basis of all success. Free time after the “Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia” (SPM) filled with useful activities and disciplines ourselves according to the specified schedule. The program also allows them to finalize their thinking after following training and to test their mental and physical endurance1.2. PROBLEM STATEMENTAdolescents are not aware of the benefits gained by joining the PLKN program. The research is as follows:1.2.1.
