Essay / Truth-telling and its impact on friendships about this. Piper says, “I find instead of the words 'education' and 'relationship' the words 'truth' and 'love.' » (Piper, 2011). The way these two are entirely parallel can teach people a lot. about how to go about having meaningful relationships. If education is truth and relationship is love, then they are related. To love someone is to have a relationship with them, to tell someone the truth is to educate them about something. Therefore, how cruel it is to deny them knowledge or, even worse, teach them a modified education. Having one without the other is like removing a vital part of a machine, it just won't perform the way it was created to. Friendships will not function as they were designed to if love or truth are absent. Just as truth supports love, Piper follows this by explaining that love also supports truth. “But there is a way to speak the truth in love, and we should seek it. This is not always a gentle way of speaking, otherwise Jesus would have to be accused of lack of love in his dealings with certain people in the Gospels. But he asks what is the most useful thing to say when everything is considered. Sometimes what would have been a harsh word for one group is a necessary act of love toward another group, not a wrong to the group being addressed. But in general, love shapes the truth in patient, gentle words and manners (2 Timothy 2:24-25). (Piper, 2011) A general misconception that speaking the truth in love must be gentle and gentle is often what stops people from being bold in love in their relationships.
