It is a widely accepted view that teaching is a complex process in which teachers attempt to transfer specific knowledge or a target skill to learners under given circumstances. The process achieves attributes of complexity, primarily due to circumstantial or personal factors, and in some cases due to the interaction of the two. Teaching conditions become unfavorable when the placement of learners in a program is inappropriate, the teaching materials are not in accordance with the needs, interests and skill level of the learners, the teaching and learning tools are insufficient, the teaching style is unsuitable, etc. Most of these factors cause learners to lose interest in learning. This loss of interest is one of the very important reasons for the failure of effective teaching. The search for the causes of demotivation is a relatively new area of research in L2 learning. This essay draws on a study conducted to identify common causes of demotivation for L2 learning in Japanese high schools. Falout Joseph, Elwood James, and Hood Michael conducted a study in 2009 with 656 L2 Japanese learners in different high schools. The study revealed the following five demotivating factors:1. Content and learning materials,2. Teacher competence and teaching styles,3. Inadequate school facilities,4. Lack of intrinsic motivation5. Test results. (ibid.) The study indicated that the majority of L2 learners viewed learning content and materials, as well as test scores, as strong demotivators. However, teachers' skills and teaching styles were found to be less demotivating factors than other factors (ibid.). Although the study was carried out on Japanese students, the results may be more...... middle of paper ......ible. Therefore, to conclude, it can be said that motivation in all its facets is an important agent that influences human behavior positively on achievement-based tasks. And its absence is one of the major obstacles affecting achievements. Psycholinguists have been studying it for a long time, but a major boom in this field was seen beginning in the mid-20th century, when Dr. Robert Gardner began conducting more in-depth research in this area. It is a complex phenomenon that affects human behavior in complex ways. The importance of motivation has led curriculum designers to design learning materials that are learner-centered and filled with interesting activities planned after conducting analyzes based on interests and needs. Education policy makers have begun to propose methods that respond more than ever to the beliefs and interests of learners..
