The idea here is that one can be wise, proud and rich, but that will not prevent one's death. “Death will erase you from the face of the earth as if you were only mice digging under the ground, and your posterity, your history, your immortal geniuses will burn or freeze with the terrestrial globe” (page 4, Chekhov). Essentially, everything that society calls the good things of the world are actually meaningless and the entire history of the human race is like a drop of water in the ocean, nothingness. Humans have “lost [their] reason and taken the wrong path. [They] took the lie for the truth and the hideous for beauty” (page 4, Chekhov). Humans have destroyed the Catholic god with capitalism and replaced his figure with the money they worship. This is why they destroyed the meaning of life and replaced it with lies; lies designed to blind society into consumerism and the pursuit of profit. Besides, the lawyer refuses to accept something worthless in humankind.,
