  • Essay / Impact of Social Media on the Dating World - 1343

Usually, a name, photo, education, sexual preference, relationship status, and likes/dislikes are posted on the user's page. These profile pages are like users' CVs, it's how others judge them, whether they can be potential partners or not. The range of potential partners expands through social media, so profiles are removed to narrow down potential partners. Although Facebook is not created as a dating site, a fraction of users search for potential partners on the site. A study led by Megan A. Moreno, MD, University of Wisconsin-Madison, asked college students their views on sexual references on Facebook. The study found that all participants reported using Facebook to find potential partners. Participants also reported that displaying sexual references on social networking sites increased sexual expectations but decreased interest in potential relationships and they found social media data to be valuable. In this study, participants based their opinions solely on the women's profiles and nothing more. With this in mind, it is not uncommon for dating sites to also adopt a structure similar to that of Facebook with a photo and a small "about me" description ยป.
