Canada is a nation of opportunity and freedom. People from all over the world immigrate to Canada to start a new life, to escape war or poverty. Canada opens its arms to them, accepts them and gives them money to launch them. But what about those who were here from the beginning, before anyone arrived in Canada? those we call members of the First Nations or Aboriginal people? What is the government doing for them? Why do First Nations people suffer the most in Canada? “55.6% of the poor are indigenous and many of them live on reserves across Canada where the Canadian government has placed them. For those who leave the reserves to live better, they suffer from the racism of Canadian society” (“Aboriginal”). This essay will argue that the natives are being treated unethically from a Catholic perspective through the way the British invaded their lands, as well as the way the government currently treats them. Finally, this essay will recognize the discrimination that society imposes on native people. Before the arrival of the British in Canada, indigenous people were settled on Canadian soil and different groups were found in different regions. “They were hunters, farmers and gatherers, fishing near water or hunting animals like buffalo” (“Discovery”). When European settlers arrived, the native way of life changed dramatically. “Their way of life particularly changed when they had to deal with European diseases. It killed a large part of the aborigines because they were not immune to it” (“Discovery”). “As the European population grew, so did the demand for land.
