We live in a world where controversy reigns around every corner. Welcome to a 20-year controversy, the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) or commonly known as Cage Fighting. Who could have imagined that these two words wouldn't spark controversy, right? No one can deny that the label implies a sport of barbaric violence. The reality is that mixed martial arts happens to be one of the safest sports in its genre of contact sports due to strict safety standards. In 1993, an idea was born: the idea was to determine what the most effective form of martial arts was. This idea was called the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It was a tournament in which fighters from various disciplines competed in an octagon-shaped ring surrounded by a fence, called a cage. There was no time limit and the only rule was that to win you had to eliminate your opponent or they had to submit; This may sound familiar due to the Hollywood film “Fight Club” which involved a group of individuals participating in no-holds-barred hand-to-hand combat.
