    Europe was a place lacking inspiration in the 13th and 14th centuries. Marco Polo is one of the world's most famous heroic travelers and traders. In 1214, Marco Polo was born into a wealthy Venetion family in Venice, Italy (Marco Polo). He was the son of Niccolo and Nicole Polo (Hoyt). He was also an only child (Hoyt). His mother raised Marco, until she died during his childhood, then an aunt and uncle raised him (Marco Polo). They were rich and he learned many important things like foreign currencies and valuation (Marco Polo). His father and uncle Maffeo returned to Venice in 1269. It was only then that fifteen-year-old Marco finally met Niccolo, the father he never knew he had (History.com). Marco's father and uncle traveled to China where they joined a diplomatic group. at the court of Kublai Khan, the Mongol leader whose grandfather Genghis Khan had conquered Northwest Asia (Marco Polo). Khan had expressed interest in Christianity and asked the Polo brothers to return with 100 priests and a collection of holy water (History.com). The Khan Empire, the largest the world had ever known, was vast for those who lived within the borders of the Holy Roman Empire (Marco Polo). The Polo brothers describe him as unfathomable (Donn). In 1271, Niccolo and Maffeo Polo returned to Asia, but this time they brought with them the young Marco (Marco Polo). Unable to recruit the 100 priests requested by Khan, they soon returned due to the arduous journey (Lewis). The Polos' journey was on land and they were forced to pass through harsh and difficult territories (Donn).
