  • Essay / Public and private health care in Canada - 1669

The private health care system is superior to the public health care system. As a Canadian citizen, it is difficult for me to imagine life without health insurance. I have had public health insurance my entire life and have been free to go to any hospital at any time and get health care. Residing in the United States, I have benefited from health care on both sides for the past 7 years. I think private healthcare has huge advantages over public healthcare. In the following essay, I will explain in three points why I am committed to private health care over public health care. What is best is always subjective, and I will not try to advocate health for all, but rather that of the individual who seeks the best possible health care and is willing to devote the resources necessary to obtain it. I will talk about efficiency and quality, not inclusion for all (free health care), I will address the root of this and not just this argument, which would distract from my attention. I won't get into the political debate between socialism and capitalism, as that is a separate argument in itself, and this country currently operates under capitalism. Having lived in both a socialist and then a capitalist society, I feel I can do this impartially. Prompt medical care may be of utmost importance. Letting things progress can lead to a downward spiral, where a minor infection, left untreated, ends up becoming life-threatening. With the increase in harm caused by health care neglect or waiting for a health care provider, the physical harm and associated costs increase, often exponentially. As an example of how effective time pr...... middle of paper .... ...is not insured and I have seen him struggle with not being insured and at how much he wished he had made it a priority to stay insured over the years. Nuala Kenny and Roger Chafe state that “Canadian health care is moving toward privatization without evidence that it will contribute to efficiency, equity, cost containment or access – highlighting the power of market to change the course of even the most valuable social programs. Canada has had a public health care system for several years and is now considering adding privatization again. This would lead you to conclude that private insurance has more advantages than public insurance. Private healthcare is superior to the public healthcare system because it offers effective treatments, better individual care and is cost-effective. I believe that the socialist healthcare system weakens a person's ability to achieve a quality of life.
