Essay / Improving Humanity's Abilities Through Video Games
Can Video Games Improve Humanity's Abilities? This is a difficult question to answer, but with research it could be answered, most people would say "no" that video games fry brains and make children violent, but research suggests that video games have real benefits for your brain and body. Daphné Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, has conducted more than 20 studies on young people playing action video games. His studies show that video gamers exhibit better skills in vision, attention and certain aspects of cognition. Gamers also perform better than non-gamers on certain tests of attention, speed, accuracy, vision and multitasking. Players demonstrate enhanced skills in the type of vision called contrast sensitivity, which is the ability to see subtle shades of gray, which comes in handy for seeing other cars when driving in fog. Gamers are also able to see smaller font types than non-gamers. Researchers have found that these effects of visual contrast sensitivity last up to two years. Several tests measuring attention have revealed that players are less distracted by what happened before and by events taking place in their environment. Players are able to detect new information that comes to them more quickly than non-players. Studies have shown that gamers don't activate their brains as much to do very complicated things with their hands, which people need to be able to do. Non-gamers have to think a lot more and use a lot more parts of their brain for hand-eye coordination, whereas gamers don't really need to use that much brain, and they just use those higher cognitive centers to do it. . Studies show that people who play action videos... middle of paper ...... llzone" and "Grand Theft Auto" behaved more aggressively towards their opponents. Video gaming improves- Is it the capabilities of humanity, I would say yes, from this research, because it shows an improvement in physical and mental skills.
