Essay / Gender Role Expectations and Inequalities in Modern Media
I decided to look at gender role expectations and inequalities in modern media and see how and if expectations and Standards have changed over the years. I studied three modern teen comedy films and found examples of many elements, including gender stereotypes, gender role socialization, gender inequality, and heteronormativity. Each film contained examples of each and I analyzed them by describing how each example shows what I interpreted it to be. My first movie that I saw was The Internship. It is a comedy about two men who lost their jobs and decided to take on the challenge of becoming interns at Google. They must compete with an army of young interns to win the jobs at the end of the internship. I saw examples of gender stereotyping during the scene where the trainees select their teams. Men are expected to be the leaders compared to women, team leaders are made up of mostly men and a few women. Within the trainees themselves, Graham is a very interesting character as he embodies the typical attitudes of a man, he is the leader of his team and chooses a member based on their appearance. Women are expected to be pretty and attractive to men, which is exactly what one of the interns believes Graham says: "Blonde, you're coming with me because of your physical appearance." This shows the stereotype that women are usually there just for the pleasure of men and their appearance dominates everything else in their workplace. I also noticed the gender inequality throughout the film. When Nick and Billy first learn that their company is closing, we see Sammy who is the leader of the company, with many sales positions owned by men, and women in secretarial positions. You also see this... middle of paper ...what I'm going to do. It shows Brandon's true feelings and how others affect his life and what that does to him, it shows that heterosexuality is expected and that since he goes against it, his is chosen and excluded because that it goes against the norms. Even in today's modern media, strong examples of gender role expectations, gender role socialization, gender inequality, and heteronormativity are expressed. Movies are a great example of where they can be found. Even though times have changed and gender role expectations have shifted slightly from traditional expectations, they are still expressed in the media we surround ourselves with daily. Due to the amount of examples found in films, we are subconsciously socialized without knowing it. Gender roles and expectations will always exist and even if they are difficult to notice, they will always be present.
