Many people around the world play sports, whether it is football, baseball, tennis, swimming, wrestling, or track and field. People have been getting together and playing sports since the dawn of time; the Olympic Games bring people together from all over the world. However, from time to time, shocking and even fatal injuries can occur. Although sports teams, prior to sports medicine, employed team physicians for many years, the field of sports medicine did not emerge until around the 20th century. The first textbook on sports medicine was published in 1910 to help athletes avoid life-threatening injuries. Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the physical fitness, treatment and prevention of sports and exercise-related injuries. There is danger in almost every sport and every athlete they participate in; the sport has caused many life-altering and sometimes even fatal injuries. As sports medicine has become a new and growing healthcare profession, many injuries have remained undocumented. The common athletic trainer may deal with minor cuts and bruises, muscle cramps, ACL sprains, ankle sprains, shin splints, and maybe even a broken bone; but from time to time they can suffer serious injuries. There have been various scandalous and horrific injuries throughout the history of sports medicine. An unnoticed, life-threatening injury that countless athletes have suffered is a concussion. Many people have heard of concussions, but not the underlying damage they cause to the brain. A concussion is a minor head injury that can occur when the head hits an object or a moving object hits the head. This can affect brain function for a while... middle of paper... out of its holder.
