  • Essay / Hairspray: Taking Camp to the Next Level - 1303

INTRODUCTIONWhat could make a comedy film better? Combine it with a musical that will have you singing along. I decided to watch the 2007 film “Hairspray”. It is a light-hearted film that will appeal to all ages. Although most see this film as a comedy/musical, the film can also add campy to its list of genres. This film addresses several different social issues while making the audience laugh and sing along. The main social issue addressed in this film is that of racism. This film also addresses gender roles with John Travolta playing a woman, as well as judgment on one's personal appearances. The main character, Tracy Turnblad, is at the center of all these problems. The year is 1962 and an overweight teenager, Tracy Turnblad and her best friend, Penny Pingleton, are obsessed with the TV dance show Corny Collins. One of the regulars leaves the show, leaving a gap to be filled. Tracy's dream has always been to be on the show. With the help of her new black friend Seaweed, she manages to get a casting call for the show, angering the star, Amber Von Tussle, and her mother, the station manager, Velma. Tracy is not the typical white teenager who believes in segregation and wants to see the Corny Collins show integrated. She does just that while winning Link's love, while also having a laugh or two and singing a few tunes. Tracy has a bubbly personality that immediately makes you like her. She refuses to let anyone or anything come between her and her dream. Tracy is not what many consider a typical teenager. She's a plump girl and doesn't let herself be brought down by what others think of her. SEGREGATION With this movie taking place in 1962, the majority of white people still looked down on black people and thought they were middle of the road. ....au."
