“VIRES Virtual Test Drive” (VTD) is a toolchain and modular framework for providing virtual environments in engineering simulations for the automotive and railway industry . Virtual Test Drive (VTD) offers a combination of central tasks and data control, traffic and scenario simulation, image generator and sensor simulation. It is one of the most comprehensive tools for the development, testing and verification of driver assistance systems, autonomous driving systems and active safety systems. VTD has integrated tools for road generation, traffic simulation, scenario generation, sound simulation, image generation and simulation control. It uses standard file formats established for the above purposes. Figure: Presentation of the VTD system Vires Structure: The overall configuration and organization of data is distributed over three different levels: 1) Distributions (Data/Distributions) 2) Configurations (Data/Configurations) 3) Projects (Data/Projects) Data configuration and simulation for runtime components can be found in all three levels. A file search tool is used to locate data by searching from the specific (project) level to the general (distribution) level. 2.3.2 Distributions A distribution contains basic configuration and simulation data (e.g. visual databases) applicable to all types of configurations and projects (see below). The data is organized by VIRES during the packaging of the release. No user data should be placed in the Distros directory. The applicable distribution is symbolically linked to Current in the Data/Distros directory. This link can be modified by calling the selectDistro.sh script in the same directory. 2.3.3 Configurations “Configurations” represent different environments in which VTD is supposed to run. With the introduction of configurations, a stronger concept of separation of platforms from project data was achieved. The following configurations are part of the default distribution: Standard desktop installation, single machine Joystick for operating the 3-channel IG MultiChannel3 joystick/game wheel on various machines Stereo configuration of IG 2.3.4 Projects: Data from the project define the real content of a simulation. VTD Components: The sole purpose of VTD brings together control, operation and simulation. Task and data control operates in an open loop. Its simulation and frame control perform external and internal triggering in real-time and non-real-time modes. It performs single-step mode operation. The frame can be in synchronous mode or free mode, as we can see in Figure 1.3. Simulation and Configuration Control is dedicated to scenario management and control of simulation steps.
