  • Essay / Counseling Theme in Charlotte's Temple - 1174

Now that Montraville realizes his mistake in taking Charlotte, he feels trapped. Because he does not believe he has violated his father's advice, he still refuses to marry Charlotte. This is seen when he responds to the report that Charlotte's father cannot give Charlotte enough money to support herself by concluding "that it was impossible to ever marry [her]" as s he always followed the advice (41). He speaks as if there would only be serious consequences if he married Charlotte. Quickly, Montraville finds himself unwilling to back down as he finds such an act "cruel beyond description" and unwilling to move forward for fear of violating his father's advice (83). This is all because Montraville applies the advice to experiences and understands that the father never thought he would do it.
