Essay / The Sacrifice of College Athletes - 894
Playing in the NCAA (National College Athletics Association) is almost every high school athlete's dream when they think about their future as an athlete. As an athlete playing for the association, they may struggle and have to make many sacrifices with no return. The AAA athletes who make billions and billions of dollars for this association could very well be the ones who are just struggling to get by. There, sport dominates their lives; there is no way to make money and still have more than enough on your plate as a student and athlete. For these coaches, sports are the first priority, so making money is simply not in the cards for these players. The NCAA organization is NOT the amature organization they claim to be. FB Although they claim there is a reason they do this they don't pay their athletes or provide them with any benefits other than educational. AAA According to US Today magazine, the NCAA is not a standalone organization and must provide its athletes with benefits that help them in their lives outside of school and athletics. They need to start being treated like human beings and not slaves of the organization. They are athletes, not slaves. (D.Stanley Eitzen) This is a multi-billion dollar industry that makes billions from athletes, who don't even receive a small percentage of their own income. Some may say they are college athletes and being a student comes first, which is true. Unless they have time, after school and after practice, when are they going to get a job or make money. Between games and school, they have almost no time, and I think that's what the NCAA needs to understand. many ideas abound to help athletes, but few have even given the time ...... middle of paper ...... how to get there? If you have family support it might be a lot easier, but what about kids who don't? These athletes must be treated as athletes and not as slaves. If the NCAA cares about its athletes like it claims, maybe it's time for it to show it. These athletes deserve better and they have the right to fight for what they believe in.
