    The Palestine Liberation Organization, although not very effective in achieving its goals during the period 1964-1974, had a significant and lasting effect on events in the Middle East. Created in 1964 on the initiative of Egyptian President Nasser, the PLO would soon become one of the most influential bodies in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Born from the desire to liberate the Palestinian homeland through "armed struggle", it was largely responsible for the Fedayeen raids which contributed to the outbreak of the 1967 war. After the 1967 war, Palestinian nationalism developed and a stronger sense of identity emerged. Thanks to this, the PLO, led by Yasser Arafat, became a powerful independent organization that used terrorist activities to achieve its goals. However, these acts of terrorism proved ineffective in achieving the PLO's goals, and so the PLO turned to peace and diplomacy to achieve its goals. As a result, during the period 1964–1974, the PLO proved somewhat ineffective in achieving the goals of its pact, furthering the Palestinian cause in name only.
