Essay / Human Genome Project: We are all one race - 929
Whether you are at a basketball game or at the mall, you can see that people vary in height, skin color, and appearance. But did you know that no matter how different we all are as humans; we are only one race. The variations we see in daily life are just physical differences, but genetically humans are the same and "race" is a term that has been used to distinguish humans due to these physical differences. You may be wondering how a person from Canada and a person from Africa have the same race, but it has been proven thanks to the HGP (Human Genome Project). This project was carried out by scientists from all walks of life to try to understand and map the genetic structure of humans. They discovered that the term “race” is a false term to try to classify us geographically according to our origin. There is no denying that we are different, but through HGP they made us understand how, biologically, we are all the same. Race/Classification of Humans What is race? Race, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, is the division of humanity based on skin color, facial features, and other physical traits. But this is no longer the truth we have been led to believe. The first thing to do is to identify the connections between the social meaning of race and its genetic definition. Scientists must determine the ancestry of groups of different people. There is a distinct signature in our DNA due to the fact that most modern humans are descendants of an African group that migrated to other parts of the world over 100,000 years ago. This caused our DNA to also contain some traces of our ancestral DNA. Scientists use polymorphisms to determine similarities between groups. There are different types...... middle of paper ......e of mice and other organisms. Society in general still does not understand this concept and therefore does not communicate this vital information to the public. This information will make people think and hopefully change some aspects of their mindset about what race is and how they perceive it. It’s time more people became educated on the issue and realized that race is a term we no longer need to use. “Until the philosophy that one race is superior and another inferior is finally and definitively discredited and abandoned... All is war. I say war. Until there are no more first and second class citizens in any nation... Until the color of a man's skin matters no more than color from his eyes, I say war. Until basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, regardless of race, I call war! » –Bob Marley
