Essay / Floods in Indonesia - 729
Floods in Indonesia are a major annual problem for poorer areas along rivers, particularly in East Java along the Bengawan Solo. The impact is not only felt on their homes, but also on their land, their plantation fields, their animals and also on the infrastructure of the villages. This means that every year they have to rebuild, renovate and replant everything that was destroyed due to flooding, resulting in heavy financial losses. Villages near the Solo River are not protected from future flooding, and few or very few changes have been made to adapt the villages to future flooding. Floods have been more frequent and larger over the past decade, likely due to deforestation. This is one of the main reasons why the Bengawan Solo floods every year. Deforestation increases land erosion and the impacts of flooding are then greater. Mudslides caused by deforestation are another impact that poses many problems. To prevent land erosion and mudslides, trees and other plants with long root systems can be planted along the river banks to reduce flooding, natural reasons such as rain and river morphology being a factor in flooding. Village residents are used to flooding and do not view flooding as a problem. They therefore adapted their lives, their homes and their crops to the annual floods. But in my opinion, houses need to be better adapted to floods, for example when the flood hits the house, the toilet also overflows, so both the interior and exterior need to be better adapted to avoid as many impacts as possible. Although flooding is a large-scale global problem, there are only three "key players" or agents that can make or break a...... middle of paper ...... ages where flood channels drainage must be constructed and dug throughout the village, so that when floods hit the village, water can flow freely through the drainage channels, this to reduce the impact on roads and crop fields, so to avoid too much damage. This is an inexpensive solution to avoid some damage caused by flooding. Since many villagers use the river for washing, cleaning, disposing of garbage and sometimes as a toilet, I propose to build small public facilities where villagers can wash clothes, wash dishes, take a bath, throw garbage and also provide toilets. It should also be proposed that the drainage be dug next to the planting fields so that the drainage channels can be used as irrigation along with the drainage channels. There should also be drainage along roads and footpaths, to lessen the impact when flooding hits villages..
