  • Essay / What is nonverbal communication? - 708

Nonverbal communication includes body movements, the intonations or emphasis we give to words, facial expressions, and the physical distance between the sender and receiver (Robbins & Judge, 2013). One of the problems with communicating through body language is that it can be unintentional. In other words, a person may communicate a message they do not intend unintentionally by the way they stand or by the expression on their face. Another disadvantage of nonverbal communication is that the appropriate physical distance during a conversation is different for each culture. Therefore, an American may feel that his personal space is being invaded by someone European, while at the same time the European feels that the American does not feel comfortable in space.
