Essay / The qualifications of elders and deacons, and their work
In 1 Timothy 3:1-7 we have Paul describing the position of an elder to Timothy. In this passage he not only describes the qualifications of an elder and the traits you would find in a man who would be appointed as such, but you will also discover what his responsibilities would be and what works would be required of a man. who would become an elder in a congregation in Titus 1:9-16. Elders actually have many different titles, including bishop, pastor, priest, overseer, and, for me, the most descriptive and accurate title, shepherd. “It is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of bishop, he desires a good work.” (1 Tim 3:1 NKJV) It is obvious that this is a good work, but what exactly is the good work? work that an elder is required to do? What does accepting the position of shepherd of a congregation of the Lord involve? In Titus 1:10-16 we are told exactly what this work is. The passage begins, “For there are many insubordinate people, both vain talkers and deceivers, especially those who are circumcised, whose mouths should be stopped…” describing the deceitful people in the world. Insubordinates, idle talkers, and deceivers all describe those people who can do the most harm to a congregation and a person's faith. In the first century, many persecuted the Church. In fact, many powerful people were against this new religion. The Jewish faith as a whole was fiercely opposed to what it considered a blasphemous religion. Nero, the Roman emperor for much of the first century, persecuted Christianity greedily and persistently. Nero had burned the city of Rome, in order to rebuild the great city in his image. As some began to distrust the Emperor, he found a scapegoat in the middle of a paper......19:9, it is written "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery” indicating that God recognizes the divorce of two people, only as long as they match the only exception God recognizes the divorce of two people, when one has committed the. adultery against another. Thus, if a former divorces in these circumstances, he is no longer recognized by God as having a wife and can remarry. When he remarries, he becomes again the husband of only one woman recognized by. God I think he can be reinstated as an elder under these circumstances I will also say that if it is controversial within the congregation it might be best for an elder to step down and stay that way. to be judged irreproachable, as previously indicated.
