  • Essay / Analysis of Hamlet's Revenge Tragedy - 1057

Unlike most revenge tragedies, there is more than one character seeking revenge in Hamlet. Laertes, like Hamlet, is faced with the death of his father, Polonius. Rather than delaying action in the face of his father's death, Laertes is ready to accuse the first person who appears guilty. This makes Laertes more like a typical revenge tragedy character. These obvious differences show the reader that Hamlet does not conform to these tendencies. Laertes is more of a lunatic and is much less dynamic as a character. Part of Hamlet's popularity may come from his dynamic character and more identifiable qualities. Laertes intends to kill Claudius in an instant, then is quickly foiled by Claudius and ready to kill Hamlet instead. Intelligence versus bravery seems to be the theme between these two opposing characters. Laertes without intelligence is quicker to act for his revenge, making him courageous but nieve almost the opposite of Hamlet's.
