Essay / Psychoanalysis of King Lear - 1429
Psychoanalytic theory was created by Sigmund Freud. According to this theory, the subconscious mind has three parts, considered to be the largest part of the human personality. These different levels are manifested in the two characters of Shakespeare's play King Lear. The two characters I chose are King Lear himself and Edmund, son of the Earl of Gloucester. The first part is called the Id. For Sigmund Freud, it was whenever the mind had a fundamental desire. It causes a person to want something so much that they tend to act selfish about it and brings out that person's inner child. In the play written by Shakespeare called King Lear, there are many characters who had enormous desires. For example, King Lear wanted his daughters Cordelia, Goneril, and Regan to tell him how much they loved him with some exaggeration. In exchange, he would reward them by giving each of them a third of his kingdom. Goneril and Regan of course wanted his land, so they gave him their love with too much exaggeration. When it came to Cordelia, she refused to give the impression that her love for her father was greater than it should have been. When she refused, King Lear began to throw a tantrum and banished Cordelia from his kingdom and her daughter's title. In the play Act 1 Scene 1, whenever Lear gives Cordelia Burgundy, he says: “Lear – Most noble Burgundy, when she was dear to us we held her thus, but now her price has fallen. Sir, she is here. If anything in this little apparent substance, or in the whole, with our reconstituted discontent and nothing more, can suit Your Grace, it is there, and it is yours. » So there he is already suffering and saying hurtful things about her. .Another character that represents the Id is Edmund, son of Earl...... middle of paper ...... paper, shall I stop him. - Here, sir. - You are worse than any name, read your own evil. No tearing, ma'am. I think you know that. Goneril- “Say if I do; the laws are mine, not yours. Who can sue me for this? Albany- “The most monstrous!” Oh! Do you know this paper?'{Goneril} 'Don't ask me what I know.' [She leaves] Albany- 'Go after her, she's desperate. Rule it.'” And in the end, they both died. One poisoned himself and the other committed suicide. So in a way he got the attention he wanted, but he ultimately apologized for feeling horrible about what he had caused. So overall the two characters, King Lear and Edmund, showed the three different parts of the mind in the play. These were the Id, the Superego and then the Ego itself. But it's not just the characters who have gone through these three levels of mentality. As human beings, we go through these three parts of the mind every day..
