  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on the Right to Die - 1817

Do we have the right to die? Do we have the right to decide what we do with our own bodies? It is precisely these questions that make it a very controversial subject. I believe the right to die is ethical because as long as you are of sound mind, you should have the right to decide your fate. You should have the right to choose death. Obviously, it's not as simple as "you have the right to die." There are different aspects of the issue to consider. First, do you legally have the right to die? So morally, do you have the right to die? So, from an ethical point of view, do you have the right to die? When I first think of the right to die, I think of terminally ill patients. I'm thinking of physician-assisted suicide. I believe that if you are terminally ill, meaning there is no chance of recovery, you should have the right to determine when it is time to die. You and only you, as the patient, should be able to determine when the suffering should end. There was one case in Texas involving a 19 month old child. She fell into the family swimming pool but was able to be resuscitated. Unfortunately, she was without oxygen for over an hour, which left her blind, deaf and unable to move. Eventually, the family came to the conclusion that they could not allow him to live like this and the hospital ethics committee agreed. And then the hardest part, how do you kill a child? Unfortunately, in the state of Texas, refusing food and hydration is the only option everyone has. This poor baby was forced to starve for almost nine days because of politics before inevitably dying. How is this human? So in this case we see that even though they were able to end his life, they were not able to use the most humane method to end his...... middle of paper...... served 8 years in prison and was released on June 1, 2007 after assuring authorities that he would not participate in any more suicides. Kevorkian was an advocate for the rights of the terminally ill. He may not have done it the right way, but what other choice did these people really have? He died on June 3, 2011 at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. The cause of his death was a blood clot. There are many arguments for the right to die. Many of them make a lot of sense and others are just plain ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this opinion should not be imposed on anyone. This right should exist because, frankly, if we want to be free people, we should be free overall, but it should be used properly. We shouldn't let people die just because they can, but if there's a valid human reason to do so, I'm all for it..
