  • Essay / The End of Chunking Express - 667

Chunking Express essentially uses a handheld camera to make each scene dynamic and vivid, showing that the lives in the film are hectic and scattered. The final scene of Chunking Express is rather calm compared to the other scenes. The reason is that the ending mainly deals with shots and reverse shots of two people, Faye and Cop 633, which is seen as parallel to their first meeting. The scene shows dialogues between Faye and Cop 633 in the same location they had. their first meeting, but a lot has changed. Over time, Faye became a flight attendant with longer hair and Cop runs the cafe after his retirement. However, there are also commonalities between the eras, which create a parallel and remind the audience of the characters' past issues. First, even if the person who wore the uniform has changed, there is still someone working in uniform. Compared to the cafe owner, the flight attendant and a cop are constantly traveling, but they still have to follow many rules. Working at the cafe seems more static, but in reality it is much more flexible because the owners can set their own rules. The change of person in uniform therefore results in a change of the person who visits and the person who greets. Additionally, the fact that Faye becomes a flight attendant reveals another commonality since Cop 633's ex-girlfriend is also a flight attendant. The cop falls in love with Faye, who he thought was a totally different kind of person, but this reminds viewers that love is actually something repetitive and similar to another. Although each love seems superficially different and original, the way people meet, love and break up is essentially the same. The ending shows how human life...... middle of paper ...... long shot, the camera crosses the 180 degree axis to show all the shots and reverse shots during the last dialogues. Breaking the axis rule helps change the mood of the scene and implies that the true final shot arrives. As the atmosphere changes, the cop also becomes more active. When the cop brings the map of California that Faye had given him earlier, the camera shows a close-up of the map. This close-up reveals that the cop kept the card with Faye in mind, which makes Faye feel touched and responds to him. The camera takes high angles from the cop's point of view, then low angles from Faye's stand. These shots make the audience view Faye as shy and cute and focus on Cop looking at Faye lovingly. The scene ends with a close-up of the audio, which was playing the theme song, California dreaming, during their first meeting, implying their new relationships..
