Although Atkins claims that it is not a high protein diet; in many ways, it essentially is. The Atkins diet ends up limiting the dieter to eating a large amount of red meats, poultry, and fish. Proteins and fats make up the majority of foods consumed. Even so, the Atkins diet almost always results in weight loss. Along with weight loss, other health benefits have been noted in medical research of people participating in the Atkins plan. The Atkins plan also claims to help control blood pressure and heart disease. Studies have shown that people following the Atkins diet had greater decreases in serum triglycerides compared to other diets.
