Essay / Molière - 906
Molière is a film set in 17th century France that shows what happened to Jean-Baptiste Poquelin during the several weeks when he mysteriously disappeared. The film somewhat reproduces certain works of Jean-Baptiste including the famous “Tartuffe”. The film gave me a vivid depiction of life in 17th century France, although I think the 2 hour film was not enough for me to know and appreciate the true beauty and elegance of the Siècle de Reason. The Italian Renaissance period had a huge influence in France until King Louis XIV came to power after the death of Louis XIII and 17th century France experienced a transition from Renaissance to Classicism. This was the so-called golden age of French literature and it flourished under King Louis XIV who was interested in theater and landscape gardening. This era gave absolute priority to the power of reason and respect for aesthetic rules. The golden age of French literature is considered one of the most important periods in French history. The common themes of emotionality, skepticism, individualism and enthusiasm, inert among men, were transformed into orthodoxy, rationalism, refinement, conformity, etiquette and order. The rationalism of René Descartes had a great impact in the 17th century. The strengthening of royal authority and Catholic influences was significant before the end of the century. The rise of classicism also changed the way playwrights were expected to write. Playwrights carefully observed and emphasized the famous principle of the three links which were the unity of time, place and action on their works, according to which a play must present a single coherent story taking place in a day.... .. middle of paper......marriages were used to give them a dynastic advantage and this can be seen in the 17th century where some royals were married to their cousins for purposes of power and dynastic advantages. Jourdain's friendship with Dorante also showed that people in 17th century France befriended people who held power in order to give them an advantage. It was also shown in the film that Molière wanted to be better than those who inspired them and even though he only wrote satires to entertain people, he still found a unique style to send meaningful messages about the life. Even though the length of the film is only 2 hours, it was enough to see how people lived back then, how they dressed and how they communicated with each other. The way people dressed has been shown to represent their social status..
