Essay / The relationship between Gregor and Samsa - 1659
The meaning of life and existence is a question that has been explored in depth in literature. As time, people and philosophies have evolved, interpretations of life and existence have evolved with them. Among the literary pioneers who explored the meaning and purpose of existence, Franz Kafka is worth noting and studying. A follower of the existentialist movement, he made it a point to explore existential philosophy in his literary works. In The Metamorphosis of Franz Kafka, the main character Gregor Samsa is the parallel to Franz Kafka, which is evident through the depiction of their similar paternal relationships, their ties to existentialism, and their inability to exist without the interference of others. The main character, Gregor Samsa, is a traveling salesman who supports his family entirely on his salary. He is proud that he had the ability to provide for his family and provide them with a comfortable lifestyle. Gregor is both the protagonist and the victim of this short story. One day, Gregor wakes up to find that he has spontaneously transformed into vermin. As the plot progresses, the family gradually takes on the role of the villain in the story. Gregor is deliberately called vermin because Kafka wanted to draw his reader's attention to the symbolic meaning of the word. Naming a specific type of bug would have caused readers to focus on the visual, overt meaning of the word. Instead, Kafka wanted the reader to understand that by using the word vermin, he is describing a useless and parasitic person. For years, Gregor worked as a slave, working for an unappreciative and ungrateful person. All this time, Gregor worked to support his family; no one in his family ever offered him help. Despi...... middle of paper ...... Franz Kafka and Gregor Samsa have complete control of their lives. Franz Kafka undoubtedly lived a life full of trials and conflicts. Creative writing and literature were the only means he had to express his true feelings. Franz Kafka once said that he wanted to find a place that his father could not reach, but such a place always existed. His father could not interfere with Kafka's love of writing. . Each time he wrote, he put an aspect of his life into this work. The Metamorphosis is no exception. A very large part of his life was used in this story and this is evident throughout. The paternal relations were the same. The philosophical views were the same, as was their inability to defend themselves. On paper, Gregor Samsa and Franz Kafka are the same individual. Gregor Samsa is the identical representation of Franz Kafka.
