  • Essay / Case of Tony Yarbough - 1346

BRIEFOn June 18, 1992, Tony Yarbough (defendant) and Sharrif Wilson (co-defendant) returned to 2832 West 23rd Street in Brooklyn, New York. The address is the apartment complex where Yarbough lived with her mother, Annie Yarbough, and her twelve-year-old sister Chavonn Barnes (Hynes, 2010). Tony Yarbough and his mother had argued before Tony left the apartment the day before. The next morning, Annie Yarbough woke up when Tony and Sharrif returned to the apartment and she approached Tony for bringing defendant to the apartment because she did not approve of their friendship. Annie Yarbough then went back to sleep after the confrontation. Once Annie was asleep, Tony, aided by Sharrif, repeatedly stabbed Annie Yarbough as she lay in her chair. Then, Tony and Sharrif repeatedly stabbed Chavonn Barnes and her friend Latasha Knox, both of whom were asleep in the apartment (Hynes, 2010). After the men stabbed all three victims, they then tied electrical cords around the necks of all three victims before strangling them. On the same days of the murders, the accused admitted to the police that he had participated in the murders and that the co-defendant had assisted him in the murders. Both men had confessed to committing the murders (Hynes, 2010). However, it was the falsified report and forced confession made by Detective Louis Scancarella. What really happened in this murder case is the following. On June 18, 1992, after frequenting the West Village neighborhood, Tony Yarbough, 18, and Sharrif Wilson, 15, returned to Coney Island where both lived. Wilson went to sleep at a friend's house, while Yarbough returned home to the apartment where he, his mother and his younger sister lived (Perlmutter, 2014). ...... middle of paper ...... those years, they were innocent. But as many students said during our discussion, it would be very difficult to be locked up in prison knowing that you are innocent but there is nothing you can do to get out of prison. Wilson and Yarbough said they felt like justice was finally rewarding them after being imprisoned for so many years of their lives. In conclusion, I feel that this case is a perfect example of the corruption of our justice system. Having detectives and law enforcement coerce confessions out of people so they can do it, but someone behind bars only shows that we as new law enforcement need to do things the right way to try to fix the justice system. to put someone behind bars we must take appropriate steps to enable us to find the real criminal who committed the crime instead of an innocent person.
