Essay / The Braintree Executive Police Softball Team
Definition The Braintree Executive Police Softball Team is made up of thirteen nine and ten year old girls who live in Braintree, Massachusetts. The head coach is a senior student at Boston University and is supervised by the father of one of the girls on the team, named Coach J and Coach P respectively. This will be Coach J's second year coaching this team, but she has been attending since high school. Coach P has coached this team before and coaches other sports at Braintree. Many of the girls on the team have played with each other before, but others are either new to the sport or have played on other teams in previous years. Due to recent bad weather, this is only the team's second practice. Coach J canceled the first two practices of the season and I ended up observing a practice designed for the team's pitchers. Coach J has decided that there should be two practices per week: one for all players who work on the offensive and defensive parts of the game and a second just for the girls who will be throwing. She believes additional training for pitchers will help build their confidence when they take to the mound and generally give them more opportunities to hone their skills. Fortunately, for the team, the first game isn't until late April, so the previously scheduled practices only served to get the team comfortable with each other. The location of each practice is at a playing field in Braintree, but rain forced Coach J to rearrange the meeting location. High school sports teams use the local high school gymnasium due to rain, but their practices usually end at five o'clock. Therefore, Coach J informed the parents of all... middle of paper ......ons, I think there might be a way to adapt this part of the practice so that it fits better what she wanted. With four girls, she could only pitch one girl at a time, taking the other two girls and making one a hitter and the other an observer. This way, the girl throwing can have someone on the mound, making the situation more like a game experience, and the other girl can learn something from watching another pitcher throw the ball. I hope this situation could take some of the boredom out of practice and allow each pitcher to improve their skills more effectively. Ultimately, Coach J is an effective facilitator who gets along well with players, parents and other coaches. From this experience, I plan to observe my own interactions with everyone involved in the coaching process and try to get along with each person as well as Coach J..
