    When established by statute in 1935, the Colorado State Patrol was established to "promote safety, protect human life and preserve the highways of this State by the courteous and strict enforcement of the laws and regulations of this State relating to highways and traffic on such highways” (CRS 24-33.5-201). Originally called the Courtesy Patrol, the Colorado State Patrol has evolved over the past 76 years into a comprehensive and complex law enforcement agency without forgetting its original mission. Through dedication to its members, past and present, distinguished professional standards and cutting-edge technical skills, the Colorado State Patrol has remained true to its traditions while meeting evolving law enforcement challenges. The mission of the Colorado State Patrol is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all people by utilizing the strengths of our members to provide professional law enforcement services that reflect our core values ​​of honor, duty and respect. To truly understand how the Patrol intends to fulfill its mission statement, you also need to know the Patrol's vision. As stated on the Patrol's website, the Patrol's vision is: "Through our unwavering professionalism and faithful adherence to our core values, the Colorado State Patrol will be a recognized leader in the national level in terms of public safety. As an agency bound by our principles of character, integrity, judgment, loyalty, courtesy, honor and knowledge, we will advance our profession by saving lives and protecting property throughout Colorado » (CSP, 2011).
