Someone could say that one becomes a mother as soon as fertilization takes place while another says that one only becomes a mother after the birth of the child. One might point out that she may have had a child before her abortions (Brooks had two children), which makes her title true. If one takes a risk, someone might think that another ironic point is why she had an abortion, she was worried about her situation. Perhaps she was at a bad time in her life and would not be able to care for the child(ren), so she "stole [their] births and [their] names" (17). . By not having children, she could protect them from starvation, disease and neglect. Overall, Brooks has a direct and overwhelming way of making readers feel moved by his situation. Abortion is a very difficult topic to discuss and often leads to protests, arguments, and physical conflict on both sides.
