  • Essay / Adolescent Alcohol Abuse - 2203

Adolescent alcohol abuse is one of the major problems that affect academic performance, cause health problems and are responsible for adolescent deaths behind the wheel and sometimes their passengers. Many teens drink because they think it's cool and don't understand the dangers of drinking. In 2008, a survey of student opinions on alcohol was conducted in the Atlanta public school system with 4,241 student respondents. The results showed that 74% of sixth graders thought there was a health risk while 25% thought there was no health risk; 81% of eighth graders thought there was a health risk, while 19% thought there was none; 82% of tenth graders felt there was a health risk, while 18% felt there was none, and 84% of twelfth graders felt there was a health risk, while 15% felt there was none. Given these results, on average across all levels, 20% of the students surveyed were unaware of the dangers of alcohol consumption. If we calculate, using the formula from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2003), "three teenagers are killed every day when they drink alcohol and drive." At least six more die every day from other alcohol-related causes” (Table 79). The impact of this student population's lack of knowledge equates to 49 of these students per week most likely dying because they do not understand the dangers of alcohol.2 The Atlanta Public School System is seeking funds to raise awareness through a strong prevention program that serves to educate students about the dangers of alcohol and to strengthen the knowledge of non-drinkers about the risks associated with alcohol consumption. The Atlant Public School System intends to develop a health program that addresses the dangers of alcohol consumption through partial replication of two preventative programs established for you. ..... middle of article ...... statistics tell us that the following interventions help reduce the incidence of excessive alcohol consumption:2. Education in secondary schools about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption3. Adolescents suffering from alcoholism often fall behind academically. Their drinking interfered with their schooling. They need to catch up with their peers so that school is no longer a stressor and they can graduate on time.4. Education is an extremely important part of treating adolescent alcoholism. Teenagers rarely understand the dangers of drinking alcohol. They need to be informed about the health risks they face when drinking. Because teens tend to feel invincible, they sometimes feel like these risks don't apply to them. Sometimes talking with another teen who has experienced serious health problems related to alcohol use can help. (read more about alcohol, 2010, p.1)
