Essay / Hester Prynne Character - 908
Hester remains loyal to Dimmesdale every time she is asked to reveal the name of her secret lover. She refuses to let him be punished like she was punished. Hester is ordered to “[s]ay the name!” from her partner in sin as she is humiliated on the scaffold, but retains her loyalty to Dimmesdale by exclaiming, "I will not speak!" (Hawthorne 64). Even under the pressure of countless eyes watching her, she prevails and keeps her lover's secret. Hester also protects the name of Dimmesdale from Roger Chillingworth, her husband. Knowing that Chillingworth seeks revenge on her partner in sin, she refuses to speak his name. She wants to make sure Dimmesdale stays safe by turning away anyone who asks for her name. Besides Dimmesdale, Hester also shows loyalty to her husband, Roger Chillingworth. She makes Chillingworth's vow and guarantees that she will not announce that he is her husband. Hester promises Chillingworth "You have kept their lover's secret. Keep, likewise, mine!... Breathe not into any human soul that you ever called me husband" (Hawthorne 71). He desires to remain unknown until he is able to discover his secret lover. She stays true to her vow until she asks permission to break it and tell Dimmesdale the truth about Chillingworth.
