Essay / Psychiatric hospitals and restraint and seclusion
Every school and psychiatric unit must always make an effort to avoid the need for restraint and seclusion. Everyone has their own opinion on what they think about these two issues and what the laws should be. School policies regarding seclusion and restraint will always be different from the policy of the psychiatric unit since they are two different environments and can deal with a different clientele. Many laws have been established and changed over the years regarding how you should and should not restrain a patient or student because you could potentially seriously injure them. It can also be bad to isolate a student or patient because they could do multiple things to hurt themselves while isolated. Seclusion and restraint began in psychiatric hospitals and has now evolved into many schools. Restrictions began in England in the mid-19th century after experiencing poor living conditions. Since Americans did not open their first public mental hospital until 1822, they were unaware of the negative history that occurred during British reform ("The Humane Side of Hospitals"). American doctors thought restraints were keeping their patients safe when in reality it was mistreatment of their patients. Anything that can be used to restrict a patient's movement is a form of restraint. Objects used as restraints may be leather or Velcro bracelets or anklets that are used to restrain the patient or tie them to their bed, lock them in their room, or by using sedative chemicals. The Quakers eventually invented the straight jacket because they were trying to help American psychiatric patients regain control of themselves. The straitjacket covered the entire body middle of paper......the student gets out of the situation and other staff members help by holding the doors open or doing what they can. Students are not allowed to stay alone in the isolation room even if another situation arises. Staff should only receive training on seclusion and restraint if schools are willing to implement it, so as not to harm students in these situations. The positive side is that it can bring calm and get him to pull himself together so he can return to class with the rest of his classmates. The negative side is that it might be scary for other students because they might not understand what is happening. In the public school they are in, they do not isolate or hold back any of the students, regardless of the circumstances, they simply help the child to gather his emotions and control them..
