Nelson was keen to transform a model of racial separation and oppression into an open democracy. In his time, Nelson played an important role as the former president of South Africa during the apartheid period. Before becoming a hero, he had to overcome considerable obstacles. Nelson spent 27 years in prison not for any murder or act of genocide he committed, but for standing up for his political beliefs and fighting for the rights of his own people. Nelson Mandela is undoubtedly one of the most memorable heroes for millions of people around the world and in particular for the black people of South Africa. Additionally, his integrity is highly valued even by white people. Black people were deprived of their rights to vote, own property, marry white people, work with white people, and even travel anywhere without carrying the proper documents. Whites wanted to ensure that no black people were considered citizens. Mandela's response to inhumane social conditions was to join forces with the ANC, the African National Congress, and end racial discrimination.
