Doubt tells the story of a Catholic nun/schoolteacher determined to determine if the priest is having an indecent relationship with an African-American altar boy. This story is a classic story of hidden scandal in the Catholic church, however, the story focuses on the mystery of whether the priest is having an indecent relationship with one of the students. The storyline can be seen as a sort of heroine's journey. The protagonist is Sister Aloysius, the head nun and director of St. Nicholas School. She deviates from the typical archetype of the heroine character, she is in tune with her animosity. She deviates from the feminine qualities of sensitivity, emotional and weak. Sister Aloysius is harsh, with a cold demeanor and a demand for compliance with the rules. Through the dialogue, Sister Aloysius appears pessimistic towards society. She told Sister James, “This parish serves Irish and Italian families. Someone is going to hit Donald Miller” (31). She understands how society views race, children's views on race are a reflection of their parents' views. She assumes the worst in a situation, as it makes her assume that Father Flynn is having an indecent relationship with one of the students. Being religious depends on one's faith in God. For Sister Aloysius to prove Father Flynn's deception, she must "take a step to remedy wrongdoing, you are moving away from God, but in service to Him." (32). This explains how far she is willing to go. This is also the moment when Sister Aloysius accepts her call to adventure. Along the way, she must overcome several challenges. She has no witnesses or proof, but she is certain. Sister Aloysius' greatest ordeal is proof of this. She must break parish rules by asking Father Flynn about his ...... middle of paper ...... window(36). The branch scratching his window can be seen as his fears scratching his soul. Sister James' concern for Father Flynn and Donald troubles her heart. Visually, the film captures the dark tone of the storyline. The colors of the scenes are dark and blue, with the characters wearing dark clothing. This demonstrates the serious nature of the subject, while setting the tone. The performances in the film help build tension. Sister Aloysius' journey takes her out of the simplicity of her life. Throughout the journey, it challenges his faith. She breaks her morals and risks everything to reveal Father Flynn's secret. Finally, she succeeded in getting Father Flynn to leave the parish. However, he is promoted to a higher level in the Church. In the true nature of the film's name, all Sister Aloysius is left with is her doubts..
