Imphal is the capital of the state of Manipur. Imphal is a famous tourist destination with historical places and sights. On 18 June 1997, Imphal district was divided into Imphal East and Imphal West with different district heads. The architectural forts, historical places and lush green valleys and hills surrounding the city offer a beautiful and mesmerizing view to tourists. Imphal is bordered by Thoubal district, Senapati district and Bishnupur district of Manipur. Imphal Past and Present About Imphal The city of Imphal was originally ruled by Kin Khaba and later by the rulers of Pakhangba. It was because of this that a powerful Ningthouja dynasty was born and ruled. After the Ningthouja tribe, the British took over and ruled Manipur. During this period, wars like the Anglo-Manipure War took place due to internal differences between family members. War also took place between the people of Manipur and the British. However, the British won and Manipur came under British rule until independence. Today, Imphal is developing at a rapid speed. The government has made all possible efforts to develop the city in terms of economy, culture, education and transportation, providing basic amenities to the people. Imphal is gradually becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in North East India. Geography and Climate of Imphal Imphal is located at an altitude of 786 meters above sea level in the far east of India. Many rivers like Iril, Khuga, Thoubal have their source in the hills surrounding the Imphal valley. The climate of Imphal is tropical or humid subtropical in nature. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cool and dry. There is no railway station in Imphal but NH-39 connects Imphal to Dimapur railhead in Nagaland and NH 53 connects Imphal to Jiribam railhead. Imphal is also well connected by roads. Impahl West district is connected to Guwahati by National Highway 39 to Silchar via NH53. National Highways 39, 53 and 150 connect Imphal East district with other places in the North East.
