An important indicator of a better adoption outcome is how early adoption occurs. Studies show that children under the age of 12 do better in terms of attachment and social relationships (Harwood et al., 2013). There are many associations that can be made between adoptees and the adversities they faced prior to adoption; which can be categorized by age at adoption placement, abuse before and during adoption, and their history of substance exposure. All of these circumstances can have a direct impact on the likelihood of mental health problems, but the establishment of good quality relationships between caregiver and adoptee becomes an important mediator of these adversities and even adoptees' educational outcomes (Harwood and al., 2013). Almost all difficulties related to pre-adoption and adoption itself are all correlated with each other: the higher the age of the adoptee at the time of adoption, the greater the likelihood of mental stress and low academic achievement is high. The same relationship is seen with abuse and substance exposure. Adoptees may face certain stresses in life that the average person might not encounter, but data demonstrates that adoption has no effect on the individual's self-esteem, on the contrary, it might even be above average.
